Bank Holiday Weekend

I've decided to learn to knit.

It could prove to be a very useful social skill.

I'm knitting a scarf, because it seemed like it would be easy, as its just a straight line. My scarf, however, does not look like it's going to be a straight line.

I started out doing it 25 stitches across (like the woman in Tudor Williams told me) and then I counted them after I'd done a few lines, and there were 31 stitches.

So I tried to do 2 stitches at the same time to get rid of some of them, which worked for a while, as I went back down to 25. But then I went back up to 39.

So then I deliberately dropped a few stitches (because I'd already dropped some, so there were already holes in the scarf...) but I accidently ended up dropping most of them in the same place, so there was a bit missing from the edge of the scarf.

So then I got my Ruth (who is good at knitting, and happens to be spending the weekend with us) to fix it for me.

I ended up losing a few rows, but I'm back on track now.

And I'm using fluffy wool (acrylic I think), rather than the traditional wool that is ripped of the backs of sheep. Its quite forgiving, because the fluffy, hairy bits hide the holes, but its also hard to see when you're doing because the hairs get in the way.

I think I should have finished it by winter....

I feel a bit old though, because I've been sitting in a rocking chair all afternoon, knitting. (Should I really be publishing a potentially name-destroying, reputation-damaging statement like that on the Internet?!)

Its a novel way to spend a bank holiday weekend though, don't you think?

In typical Bank Holiday Weekend fashion, it has been raining all day. And in typical Bank Holiday Weekend fashion, we are trying to have a BBQ. I'm sitting here nice and warm, but I can see my dad and my brother standing in the garden, incinerating meat.

And in other news.........

I'm planning to take up ballroom dancing. I don't think they do that in the Malden Centre though, and I dunno where else to check. This is because I watched 'Shall We Dance?' yesterday. It inspired me. My family are being a bit unsupportive, because they keep reminding me of what happened when I did ballet. That was 12 years ago now. But the video tape still exists. Somewhere. And I'm not going to relax until I find it and destroy it.

Also, I'm re-thinking my A Level choices, and therefore the rest of my life. I think I'm probably better at English than Science, and I do enjoy English as well, so maybe I should go down the Language route rather than the Science route? I can't think of many careers in English apart from journalism and teaching and acting. I used to want to be a journalist, but the other two don't sound very appealing to me. Although I decided a long time ago that journalism is probably a lot more glamorous on TV than it is in real life. Medicine may be more rewarding.

Anyway, if I'm gonna change my mind, I have to hurry up, because they have already made the A level option blocks. So I may actually be too late already....

The meat is fully incinerated now, so I have to go.

Enjoy your Bank Holiday Weekend!!!
